Nearly every Australian has already taken action to reduce their carbon emissions. Whether you are turning off lights, driving less, buying carbon offsets or even installing solar panels. If you’re concerned about climate change, you want to know that your actions to reduce carbon emissions count. And that what you are doing is helping to reduce the impacts of climate change.
CHOICE wants to make sure that your actions count. And we’ve already had a campaign win – 1,293 consumers signed our original petition to Minister Wong.
And the government has heard or voice.
- They’ve changed the policy to count ALL greenpower purchases as voluntary, rather than just greenpower sales that exceed the 2009 total.
- And crucially, they’ve agreed to the CPRS cap and our Kyoto commitment will both be tightened according to the amount of greenpower sold.
But wait Minister Wong, there’s more!
All voluntary actions consumers are taking NOW, will only be counted 5 years from now. This is nonsense.
The sensible thing to do is tighten the cap in each year, according to the carbon value of voluntary actions taken in that year. In the scheme of things, with so many problems with the CPRS, this at least is such a simple thing to fix, and it will help the CPRS deliver what consumers expect when they decide to take voluntary climate change action – real emissions reduction, now.
Sign our petition and let's get your actions counted now.
