Test results for 17 multifunction printers from $79 to $699
Multifunction inkjet printers (MFP) combine many functions into one device. It seems rare, however, that any multifunctional device does well at all its functions. We are now testing MFPs in Australia so our previous MFP test is not directly comparable to this one as the method for testing has changed slightly with more emphasis on their main functions.
We tested for:
- Print quality and speed
- Ease of use
- Scanning performance
- Copy performance
You might expect an MFP to have a financial saving on its side. We made a simple calculation of running costs in one year and found these devices can cost more than 19 times the initial purchase price.
It’s no surprise some people will choose to buy rather than refill their old printer. In our view, this is a direct consequence of the high price of ink. If prices were realistic, manufacturers could very well make a valid sustainability claim – but only provided they were willing to forgo a portion of the massive profits they make on ink.
It's not all bad news. Some MFPs we tested do a good job at almost all their functions. If you’re willing to foot the running costs, some can be worthwhile if you need a device for all occasions and in many cases come out ahead of buying a separate device for all the functions they have. Some of the more expensive MFPs also have neat features such as a touchscreen, wireless capability for access throughout the home, fax and memory card access so you can put the card from your camera straight into the printer without having to go through your computer.
For those who aren’t too fussed about the quality or speed of printing, there are a couple of bargains in the mix – see the comparison table. Consider the running costs as well as any lower initial purchase price.
